Weekend Preview

I'll be concentrating entirely on the two big games coming up this weekend (for want of spare time to do justice to the rest of the bunch, sorry about that!).

The Manchester Derby

The Red and the Blue sections of Manchester come face to face this weekend in what has become a much anticipated derby clash. What used to be a regular run-of-the-mill huge vs small derby, where the small, over the last few years, unusually came better off on more occasions than not, has now taken a completely different complexion since City's takeover by the Arab behemoths. Its no more seen as huge vs small but as huge vs potential juggernauts. The recent form of both teams have been pretty indifferent, going by their usual standards....but a derby always brings something special as they say!

Not only is the game a derby between two bitter local rivals but it also has a small battle within the battle. Robinho epitomizes Man City as Ronaldo does Man Utd. The former has great potential and wants to be the best in the world one day, the latter is the reigning best. Robinho will take this chance with both hands to show the world and Real in particular that his former employers made a mistake by continuously pursuing Ronaldo and ignoring the gem they already had in their ranks. It would be unfair to say that its Ronaldo vs Robinho out and out, far from it...but this will be an interesting little battle to watch out for.

We have to go all the way back to May last year when Man Utd failed to score on two consecutive games, hence Sir Alex would be hoping their attack devoid of Berba through injury doesn't fail on a third occassion in a row. We might have to dig history books to find that kind of a record. Man City are good too going forward with Robinho and especially Ireland in a great goal scoring nick, but to face Rio and Vidic is a totally different prospect.

Verdict: I will go for an away win with plenty of goals......4-2 to Man Utd.

The London Derby

We are looking at a strange game here. At the start of the season, this fixture would have been dubbed as a tug-of-war between two genuine title contenders...what it has now become is a game where credentials are at stake(at least partially) , not for Arsenal, who are well and truly out of the race after five defeats and the problems going on at the Emirates, but for Chelsea. This season again, they have an appalling home record compared to their fantastic away one. Three draws and a loss at home out of seven is hardly a championship winning form, and if not for the away results, they'd be quite far away from the top. Scolari's argument that on away days, the home teams attack more and hence leave gaps for the Blues to exploit...while at The Bridge they come to park the bus and get a draw, maybe a valid one, but that also reveals the one dimension-ness of the Chelsea attacks. They fail to break down packed defenses because they lack one player, like Ronaldo or Robinho, who can draw defenders and create space for others. They depend heavily on passing the ball around the final third hoping for the defense to make a mistake and leave a space for Anelka, Lampard or Malouda to get into. Comparisons are made between Mourinho's and Scolari's Chelsea, but I have to bitterly concede.....however beautiful the football's being played under Felipe, Jose had an edge in big games.

Arsenal pose a different prospect though. They will come as a not so well organizes defensive unti with great attacking ability. Arsenal's display agianst Man utd showed that if the gunners have the right kind of motivation, they are good enough to beat anyone on their day, except for Stoke and Hull, of course! Needless to say, they would be highly motivated for this one too and the threat they pose will not be overlooked by anyone inside Stamford Bridge. Whether they hang on to fourth(or even come better off) or let Aston Villa take that hallowed spot for once, this game has little bearing on that. What a bad result for Chelsea would do for their title credentials, on the other hand, is something completely different.

Verdict: A fairly open game with lots of goal-mouth action. An uncomfortable home win 2-1.

Enjoy the weekend ahead!

I see there are 2 comparisons here...

Mourinho vs Scolari

Mourinho might be the best manager Chelsea has ever had but dont forget the fact that he had millions to spend as soon as he came in and he literally bought a first 8(considering terry, lampard and cole were already there). Having said that, it takes a genius to get them playing together...

As for Robinho vs Ronaldo, its kinda like the Aguero vs Messi a month back when Atletico met Barca and the fans started singing "Aguero who?" by the 20th minute. I suspect a similar thing happening here..

Everyone has been raving about how tough the premier league has become but to be honest , going by these seasons matches , the time is not too far when it also dubbed as the most boring.

One can see what the teams which are not as technically gifted as the top teams are doing. I think you need to appreciate some of the managers as well the way they cracked the playing styles of top teams. But it's become a disgrace to see how often teams are parking their buses infront of their goals. One can understand if a Stoke or a West Brom doing that , what about teams like Villa,Newcastle ?

Seeing villa playing with a formation 9-1 against United was nothing short of misery.
But I think eventually top managers like SAF, Wenger , Scolari will find ways to penetrate the more than usual packed defences. That is the reason I believe the actual season this time is going to start from Jan-Feb, the one who plays the best football for the last 2-3 months is going to walk away with the title.

And about the predictions , what a weekend this is going to be ?

Mancity cannot hope to defend , its fans would want to see its team attack United and an early goal for them would United into action who have been unusually cautious this season.

The same goes for the London derby. Arsenal have to win to prove something. they have a point to prove and Chelsea havent done well in the big matches this season and this their time to correct that and their home record.

So lets hope we get to see two great entertaining matches and let the best teams win ( let it be the champs of europe !! :D)

sheikhs vs american geezers
considering the present form one might expect a boring day in Manchester with lots of scrappy goals.

gooner kids vs Mighty Blues
lots of foreplay and sex on the football pitch will make a day for a neutral.

P.S number of goals will not matter ad i am not expecting more than 3 goals in the match

the away form will see us through...everyone is saying we could not beat any of our top four rivals at home....well we have a better away record since past two years than the home one...so you'd get to see what we can do at their home.

come on blues!

Vivek's observation that even teams like Newcastle, Villa, Spurs park the bus against ManU and Chelsea in hope of getting just that point is something that has bewildered me too this season. These teams are supposed to crack the top four(well, of course not Spurs!) and you cannot do that if you are not positive against bigger teams. Is it because they have already given up the fight due to the enormous resources the top two contain in terms of players and finances, that they feel they cannot sustain their fight, and have set their objectives to be the best of the rest?

I thoroughly enjoyed both the matches , very entertaining.

United kicked Citeh out of the park in the first half. They should have finished the match then .

Arsenal vs Chelsea was a typical premier league match ,high intensity, they never stopped running, always end to end stuff. If I can give my two cents on Arsenal's performance yesterday , I think it is becoming more and more evident that they are missing a center mid. They allowed Ballack and Deco way too many times to slide in a through ball to Anelka/Kalou only to be saved by it's defence.

Ticket from Madrid to Manchester:300 pounds
Contract fee : 32 million pounds
Playing 90 minutes in the back pocket of an 18 yr old RB: PRICELESS

My prediction comes true -London derby had more goals even if the illegal goal is unaccounted for.

Manchester derby was all about a scrappy goal and a Portuguese princess trying to salvage her makeup
all evening.

Lango might have to think twice before increasing his stakes since arsenal will continue loosing to
other teams.
Not much of robinhos fan am i but hughes was saying he was playing there just of the sake of sheikhs , they had their bets on who will comeup with maximum number of stepovers , they were not amused by the charms of princess and stepober boy.

One quick question. Just why did Ronaldo try to handle the ball instead of heading it...even if he heard a whistle(which he didn't, for sure)??
