The Mighty Blues?

No, not about Chelsea! There wouldn't be a question mark there in that case. But Manchester City!

Browsing through SkySports, I came across this funny bit....Man City fail in a massive bid for Casillas. There were talks of buying out his contract which stands at a staggering 128M and paying 230K per week in wages to the Real keeper. Its funny, part because of all these figures quoted, but mostly because you still cannot imagine Casillas or Kaka going to Manchester City, can you? True that most footballers today are mercenaries with all the Matt le Tissiers and Maldinis of the world either extinct or on the verge but what these players still have in them is some amount of pride. Ambitions of the club still count at least on equal footing to their weekly wages.

'Money can't buy success' is a cliche floating around in footballing world like mist on Himalayas. But in City's case, money will not be enough to buy the first step towards success - big players. (Robinho is not a big player!) We often compare them to the Blues from west London and say that City can emulate what Chelsea did five years back. There are marked differences between the two and here I am to point all of those out...

Chelsea were already there or thereabouts the top when Roman took over. They were already a Champions league team which is a big factor for top players to join. It was easier to lure good players than it would be for City for foreseeable future. Also being in London helped Chelsea's cause.

One thing Hughes should refrain from at this moment is talking about the biggest players right away. Kaka, Casillas, Buffon, Torres will not come to City for whatever money you offer them. Period. What they can look for in the market are very good, but still not star, players. Much like Ranieri and Mourinho did. They bought the best from Porto, Renne, Lyon, Marsielle, PSV et al rather than trying from Real, Milan or Juventus. What this does is, at least, it doesn't make you a laughing stock in the market. Make a brand quite like Chelsea did, perform on the pitch, and become a top club before trying to sign galacticos.

I am quite sure success will eventually come to Man City if their owners are serious. It will, however, be a question of when. Is Sparky the right man for the job? I would like to think so, but I have my doubts.

""Robinho is not a big player!""
I wonder why the self-proclaimed "Mighty Blues"(Chel$ki) were behind him before the "Mighty Blues?"(ManC) managed to grab him??

""Chelsea were already there or thereabouts the top when Roman took over. They were already a Champions league team which is a big factor for top players to join.""
Now, who ever watched Chelsea before Mourinho or atleast cared to check out the previous UCL appearences of Chelsea wouldn't agree. Chelsea managed to qualify for UCL once in a while...huffing and puffing...until it turned into Chel$ki.

But one thing is for sure...Mourinho is way better than Hughes. He didn't care about big names. He chose the players who would fit into his team. He did whatever it took to get them. That was the result of overpricing some players to get them at any cost.

So, it's always nice if the club you are supporting is going to the top thru shortcut but it's always a pain when other clubs are doing the same.

This doesn't mean i support ManCity. Infact, they are making fools out of themselves by making such outrageous bids and allowing their players to spread meaningless rumours.

That was a tomgue in cheek remark. Of course Robinho is a class player, but the way he's ridiculing City, I'd say lucky escape for us. 32M for a loud mouthed prima donna could've backfired.

Chelsea were irregular to CL before Roman, yes, but they were regularly in top six and boasted some big players already. Whereas City are not even a regular top ten side.

Hughes has to have more sense or he's destined for the exit door quite like Keane.

The fact that robinho does not play for a big club does not make him a small player. He played for the best club( records and trophies say so)in the world and for inexplicable reasons he wanted out.
owing to some bad advice and robinho himself did not know where he was going to until the elventh hour still doesnt not make him a small player.
the proclamation of Chelsea as mighty blues comes from the fact that among all the blue teams we are biggest team and we have won UEFA cup , super cup couple of FA cups and some of best european players played for chelsea. To enlighten the relatively younger football fans here some of the players who played for mighty blues include GEorge weah , vialli, lebouf , desailly ,our very own zola etc played for chelsea b4 roman era.Chelsea used to produces England internationals like glenn hoddle , dennis wise , terry venebles , and some greats like peter bonetti , ron chopper harris etc on consistent basis.

The mighty bues always proved to be thorn in flesh for Manchester united and arsenal during nineties.
Ofcourse roman wanted to buy liverpool ahead of chelsea remember even pool failed to qualify few times for ucl during nineties .Epl started in 1993 if am right and during these 15 years i bet chelsea are more succesful than liverpool.( look at the trophy cabinet since 93) and we are ranked number one club in UEFA rankings owing to our european and domestic exploits during last 5 seasons and we have created history , we are creating history
we will continue to create history.

Duffu mentions players like desailly, vialli and then says our own Zola , lol .

Chelsea was never a thorn in the flesh for Manutd and Arse in the 90's. They won matches but were not like say how pompey have been to Utd off late.

As Rahul said , Chelsea's situation was totally different from citeh's. Chelsea could attract players. They had money but were not insane.

Anyway make a bonfire
Put liverpool on the top
and City in between

Regarding chelsea being thorn
Chelsea has very good record against manu before roman era inspite of the fact that it was not top 4 club or a champions league regular.
pre roman era chelsea fans still believe Zola is the best overseas player to play for chelsea and also one amont the league
