Man City brought back to earth

The richest club in the world was knocked out by Brighton and Hove Albion in the Carling Cup third round. Would this result go onto haunt Mark Hughes? Would this defeat against a league one side take the piss out of Man City’s owners? Would its ridiculously rich Arab owners bid 200 million for every young star to take them to the next level?

Surely by now the Arab sheiks must have realised that money doesn’t buy everything. It might give you short success but a club needs much more than that to truly be considered as a great club.

To quote from Sir Alex Fergusson’s latest interview when asked about Man City, this was what he said:

"Back in the 1950's Sunderland were called 'The Bank of England Team' - and they got relegated. There are no guarantees.

"You can buy 11 individuals - you can buy 11 Robinhos but it wouldn't be a team would it?

"The art of management is building a team with balance, with certain characteristics that blend with each other - that's the most important thing."

The defeat against Brighton might have greater implications that what one might expect. Has Manchester City actually lost the hope of any silverware this season? Because this was certainly their best shot at boasting of silverware this time.

Nice post. But Why..Why is there so much cry about ManCity?

Are we cautious of their money?
Are we (read Chelsea) jealous how could they get Robinho?
Are we hooked on to Chelsea so much that we can't see any other team in BPL spending so much?
etc.

Yeah there are rumours that they will buy every superstar/rockstar/trackstar of football world. So what? They may actually do it. It has been a month only since the takeover took place.Tell me a footballer who doesn't want to earn money?

I say..give them an year atleast. The champions have stars in their team. Either you make them or you buy them. Mancity wants to buy. And we will see what they accomplish next season.

Expecting a silverware out of them this season , i guess is too much of a promise to ask for !

I dont think that crashing out of the carling cup would be that big a disappointment for Mancity.
With the targets they have set for themselves, and the money they are willing to spend, not being in the top four or not doing well in FA and UEFA cup(are they in it??) would be bigger disappointments.
Moreover this match came too early in the season and their team still needs some more time to gel together.
But they should have done better against a championship team

Sir is partly right that you can buy 11 individuals and yet not have a team(Real Madrid earlier this decade for instance). But then, thats what the manager is paid huge salary for. I'm sure Sparky is actually the guy to do the job...and while this season might have started too early for them(with their owners expecting the same results as Ranieri achieved for Chelsea), next season I'm sure they'll be in the big four..maybe at the cost of Pool or Arsenal.

You should also remember that the league is much more competitive than it was back when Abramovich took over Chelsea. Man City surely have a tougher job in hand....but money at least guarantees you the resources to go and achieve success(if not success itself).
